Marukyu Koyamaen is one of Japan’s most prestigious tea manufacturers, founded in 1704 in Uji, Kyoto, the heart of Japanese tea culture. Family-owned for over 300 years, the company is known for preserving traditional tea cultivation and processing methods. Marukyu Koyamaen supplies top tea schools, temples, and shrines, and has earned numerous awards, including multiple first-place wins at Japan’s National Tea Competition. Their matcha is widely regarded as some of the finest in the country for both ceremony and everyday enjoyment.

Yugen Matcha is characterised by a refreshing grassy aroma with a well balanced flavour that’s between mild bitterness and umami, this Matcha goes great with everyday drinking whilst still providing a wonderful flavour and aroma. It’s also one of the best known of all Marukyu Koyamaen’s Matcha products.

How to Prepare

Sift 1–2 tsp of matcha into a bowl. Add 60–80 ml of hot water (80°C). Whisk in a zigzag motion until frothy. Enjoy it straight or add milk for a creamy matcha latte.

I’ve been branching out and trying different matcha powders, and after a few different recommendations, I chose this one. Such a good decision! It’s such a good matcha, especially in a latte. A really nice balanced flavour that isn’t overly bitter or floral but instead, a good earthy umami flavour with a hint of sweetness. Super versatile and worth a try
