Yamamasa Koyamaen is a traditional and historic tea company based in Uji, Japan, founded in 1861. They are well regarded for maintaining very high standards for their raw material, processing, and stone milling, and have won first prize 22 times at Japan's National Tea Competition

Shikibu no Mukashi captivates with its intensely creamy texture and mild, nutty undertones. The umami-forward finish remains on the palate, enhancing its refined, soft character.

How to Prepare

Sift 1–2 tsp of matcha into a bowl. Add 60–80 ml of hot water (80°C). Whisk in a zigzag motion until frothy. Enjoy it straight or add milk for a creamy matcha latte.

At first, I was a little hesitant about ordering from this store, as there were no reviews on Trustpilot and they had recently changed their name from Yuki to Yusen. This particular batch also expires in January 2027, so I was slightly concerned that it might not be as fresh. However, delivery was incredibly quick, and everything about the matcha itself has been amazing.

Poor value for money (30g tin). Just way too expensive for what you get (£1.06 per gram) The taste was just average. Tried as both koicha and latte.
